Notes for Philadelphia

The pictures are hung in ensembles — paintings, ironwork and furniture arranged by line and colour rather than by date or school. It is infuriating for about twenty minutes and then it is the most interesting hanging in America.

Nothing is labelled beside the pictures. Take the printed guide if you must, but try one room without it first.

Philadelphia is ninety minutes from New York and two hours from Washington by train, which makes it the easiest link in this whole page. One entry, one afternoon, and no need to stay the night unless you want to.
