Egypt

A country everyone visits for the tombs, kept here for two houses of a much later date and rather better manners.

Notes for Egypt

Everything this country is famous for is four thousand years older than anything kept on this page, and I have nothing useful to add about it. What Egypt holds for a directory of houses is a much later Cairo: domestic rooms, screened windows, courtyards built for the heat and the eye at once.

November is what I know. The light was low and dry by four, the rooms were cool without being cold, and I had the Gayer-Anderson roof terrace entirely to myself, which I am told is not always the arrangement.

The second entry is an intention, not a memory. The Museum of Islamic Art has been rehung since I was last in the city and I have not gone back to see it, so it stays hollow here until I have.
