Austria

A country that keeps its best things in drawers, brings them out on a schedule nobody publishes, and expects you to have arranged your year around it.

Notes for Austria

One entry, and I can hear the objection from here. Austria is not short of collections; this directory is short of Austria. What is written down is what I have stood in, and in this country that comes to a single set of rooms in Vienna.

It is a country organised around works on paper, which is a quiet way of saying that its greatest holdings are kept in the dark and shown in rotation. You do not turn up and see the drawings. You find out what is out, and then you decide whether to go.

January is my answer here. The city is cold enough to keep everyone indoors, which does nothing at all for the queues, but the light through those windows in the middle of winter is worth the standing.
