São Paulo

Two entries by one architect: a gallery with no walls, and a house made of nothing but window.

A city that does not flatter itself, and therefore has nothing to hide behind when a building is good.

Not a Monday. The afternoon is written from experience; the house is written from hope.

The entries

One stood in, one applied for.
An empty concrete gallery hall with a full-height window onto dark tropical foliage
Interior · the hall, and no wall in it

Take away the wall and the painting has to face you like a person. I have never been able to look at a hung gallery the same way since.

LATE AFTERNOON
Still on the list in São Paulo
Kept here so I cannot quietly forget it.

Notes for São Paulo

The gallery sits directly on the metro and can be done on an hour's notice; the house cannot be done at all without writing first. Treat them as two different kinds of appointment and the day arranges itself.

Distance here is measured in traffic rather than miles. Morumbi is not far from Paulista and is nonetheless a serious piece of an afternoon; do not stack it against anything you would mind missing.

Two entries is not a verdict on the city. It is a verdict on how little of it I have seen, and I would sooner leave the page short than pad it.
